Introduction to Edge Computing

Edge computing is a distributed computing architecture practice where customer data is processed at the edge of the network, as close to the original source as possible. To be precise, edge computing moves a certain percentage of storage and compute resources out of the central data center and closer to the data source itself. Therefore, the work is done where the data is actually generated, unlike traditional IT where the raw data is transmuted into a central data center for processing and analysis, which takes time.

Edge computing technology is growing because of the benefits it offers to businesses. It helps to get the correct information in the fastest way. 75% of the data a business produces can be created and processed outside of a traditional centralized data center or cloud, just move the data and storage as close as possible to the edge of IT where the data is actually processed. State-of-the-art computer technology is used in manufacturing, agriculture, occupational safety, network optimization, transportation, retail as well as the improvement of health services.

IDC conducted a survey sponsored by Lumen Technologies and Intel Corporation on the basis of advanced computing. According to the survey, two-thirds of global IT leaders are leveraging advanced computing technology where data processing takes place closer to the edge of digital interaction. The survey also predicted that by 2023, more than 50% of new IT companies will be implementing advanced computing. In the midst of the 4th Industrial Revolution which is driven by IoT, 5G, AI and Machine Learning, it has become mandatory for every organization to accelerate its growth rate and create new digital experiences.

Importance of edge computing

Modern technologies produce a huge amount of data that provides organizations with massive competitive advantages that organizations can effectively and efficiently derive from various sources, determine and analyze it, and then react to that information. But to be successful, organizations need the data cycle to accelerate at high speed, and that’s where advanced computing comes in.

The world is highly connected, smart devices are flourishing, new technologies evolve and customer interaction becomes more vital than ever, and in such circumstances speed and potential matter. High inactivity disrupts the flow of data and reduces the performance of the application and hence all this affects the functioning of a business.

In such a case, edge computing plays an important role as it moves data and storage resources closer to the point of origin of the data, thereby reducing the distance and time required to move critical information. This results in faster access to data and also reduces the cost required for data movements.
