5G critical services drive productivity and efficiency in industrial operations
BELLEVUE, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Modern 5G networks have introduced technologies such as Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) and support for Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) to meet a multitude of networking needs reviews. Today, 5G Americas, the voice of 5G and 4G LTE for the Americas, announced the release of its latest white paper covering mission-critical services in 5G networks titled “Understanding 5G and Time-Critical Services “.
Chris Pearson, President of 5G Americas, said, “Continued advancements in fifth-generation wireless cellular standards and networks will address new use cases in enterprise and industry. These complex use cases often require the delivery of data within a specified timeframe with a high degree of guaranteed reliability.
According to the white paper, urgent services require that the clients and servers of the services on the network be strictly synchronized, and that its underlying communication network be ultra-reliable and strictly limited by latency. 5G’s URLLC and TSN capabilities will help support an array of use cases spanning automotive, transportation, healthcare, education, media production, forestry, public safety, banking, utilities and more.
Support for mission-critical services on 5G networks has been incorporated into various enhancements in Versions 16 and 17. The white paper describes the impact of these technologies on legacy networks based on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) that have traditionally provided the required timing accuracy, as well as the IEEE 802.1 TSN standard from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers which is becoming the converged networking technology for factories to enable deterministic and low latency communication.
“Understanding 5G and Time-Critical Services” explores the following key topics:
Main use cases and requirements
Technology enablers in 5G versions 16 and 17
5G architecture supporting time synchronization, IEEE TSN and Requested Time Sensitive Communication (AF) application function
Synchronization Service Resilience
Ultra-reliable, low-latency communication
Accuracy and time synchronization services
Timing as a Service (TaaS) Security on 5G
Fatih Ulupinar, Principal Engineer, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and 5G Americas Task Force Leader, said, “Ultra-reliable, low-latency, time-sensitive networking can bring ubiquitous and seamless connectivity while meeting the demands of real time. They have the potential to unlock new use cases and applications for automation and will lay the foundation for Industry 4.0. He further added, “Time-aware networking can provide guaranteed data delivery within a guaranteed window of time, making it a key technology for an enhanced automated 5G ecosystem.
Engineers from Intel and Qualcomm led the working group that wrote the article.
